NEWS FOR 2018!!!
Happy New Year to all our guests and that includes our four-legged friends too!
We are very much looking forward to welcoming you all to The Manor House and The Manor Cottage this year.
We ended 2017 welcoming guests to both our properties for Christmas and the New Year and our wonderful caretaking team, Paul and Tracy were busily decorating trees in both properties for a festive welcome for everyone.
January is typically a quieter month for bookings and it gives us the opportunity to upgrade both properties and carry out any necessary maintenance. We have been busy removing unwelcome vegetation from the back wall at the back of the cottage and we have installed a new security light at the front door. At the Manor House, we have been refurbishing all of the gates, one of which has a letter in the design of the gate. By the beginning of March, we will have a lovely new kitchen floor and new windows downstairs and in the lounge bay, adhancing the wonderful view of Crantock beach. And we have put a new door on the single bedroom which also has a new bed.
This gorgeous photo is of the sun setting over the poppy fields of West Pentire right behind The Manor House and The Manor Cottage and can be found in the Spring edition of the National Trust magazine. It was taken by Ian Mayou and this winning photograph appears on the 2018 National Trust membership card. The judges said 'The image makes you want to find this place. It's so inviting and vibrant' ....... The poppies and cornflowers can be found in the fields in June and early July and the arable fields are managed by the National Trust and the dramatic coastal backdrop to these colourful fields at Polly Joke, is all within a short stroll from The Manor House and The Manor Cottage.
As many of you know West Pentire where the houses are located is a gem of a location ( as the photograph above testifies) and great for walkers with or without dogs with stunning views all around the headland. The pretty village of Crantock, a 15-minute walk away has a really friendly village shop selling delicious hot pasties (which sell out fast) and groceries and papers and has a post office there too. The Cosy Nook cafe in the centre of the village does great food as does the Albion Pub which accepts dogs. May I also recommend a visit to the parish church in Crantock where you can learn a great deal about the local history of the village. Crantock is the site of an altogether much older settlement - Langurroc, which means the 'dwelling of the monks'. A college was founded here which could claim as much antiquity as any college in Oxford since it appeared to have had great revenues in the Survey of 1294. It closed in 1545. The city of Lanurooc was a wealthy city with several churches and some rich inhabitants. Sadly a great storm raged for 3 days and 3 nights and Lanurooc became buried in the sand!
....... and if it isn't enough that you are spoilt with the stunning Polly Joke beach and surrounding National Trust poppy fields, then situated on the other side of The Manor House and The Manor Cottage is the award-winning Crantock Bay beach .... simply stunning.
Going further afield may I recommend a visit to the village of St. Mawgan which boasts a fantastic cafe with delicious food and great service and also in the village is a Japanese Garden and Bonsai Nursery which holds a stock of amazing diversity, including indoor and outdoor species of oriental tress. Entry to the nursery is free, although there is a small charge to walk around the calming Japanese Garden.
In nearby Newquay don't forget to check out what is on at the 138 seater Lane Theatre which shows at least four different productions a year and the new Lighthouse Cinema, so named because of the panoramic view across Newquay Bay to Trevose Lighthouse featuring 3D projection on two screens. And do pay a visit (there is plenty of parking) to Steins fish and chip shop and restaurant on Fistral Beach where there are some nice shops there too.
So there is plenty to see and do in 2018 in West Pentire and the surrounding areas.
Make this the year that you take a week or more out to explore this wonderful part of the South-West.
